Provisional Recognition

Provisional Recognition is permitted for specific products, components, materials or systems to determine their suitability for UL Listing or Recognition. Products or components eligible for provisional Recognition usually require one or more long-term tests. This includes components and materials covered under UL's EIS test program. Provisional Recognition is temporarily assigned based on the projected likely final ratings from data that is being developed.

Provisional Recognition may be granted after approximately 2,000 hours of thermal aging provided that the data generated at two or more temperature points confirms the manufacturer's desired rating points. Provisional Recognition is essentially the same as final Component Recognition, with the understanding that it is granted based on preliminary thermal aging data. UL may raise or lower the rating once thermal aging has been completed.

Before UL grants provisional Recognition, manufacturers are required to provide a letter indicating that they understand the implications and risks involved with provisional Recognition. UL provides a template of this letter that must be submitted on the manufacturer's company letterhead, exactly as is. Download a copy of the template.
